The final woodworking step in these free woodworking plans is to assemble the entire classic wooden toolbox.
Using a small brush, apply some waterproof woodworking glue to the dovetail joints on one end and both corresponding side joints. Assemble the three pieces.
Next, slide the plywood bottom into the dadoes of the three assembled pieces. Use no glue in the dadoes, as the plywood should be allowed to expand/contract with moisture as needed.
Apply glue to the remaining end's dovetails and the corresponding dovetails in the side pieces.
Slip one end of the dowel into the already assembled end, and then add the second end onto the assembly. Wipe off any excess glue that seeps out of the joints.
Align the dowel so that the grooves in each end are oriented vertically. Apply a small amount of glue to both sides of one wedge, and drive the wedge into the end of the dowel, as shown in the image on this page. Drive the wedge until it can't go any farther, and trim off the excess with a sharp utility knife. Repeat on the other end of the dowel.
Use clamps to align and hold the dovetail joints and wait for the glue to dry. After it has cured overnight, remove the clamps and perform some final sanding.
Clean all sawdust off of the assembled wooden toolbox and apply the paint or stain as desired.
