Cut the Decorative Coves in the Stiles

Routing the Decorative Edges

Routing the Decorative Edges

While the router table has the cove bit installed and set to the appropriate depth, we'll cut a decorative cove profile on each side of the faces of the stiles (side pieces). However, these decorative cove cuts will not extend the entire length of the stile. Instead, the cut will begin and end 5-3/8" from each end.

To simplify this task, clamp a piece of 1x stock (1x4 or 1x6) onto your router table's fence on each side of the router bit, about an inch away from the cutter. Then, adjust the fence so that the stile glides across the first piece of stock, through the cutter (against the bearing) and then across the second piece of stock.

Before you begin, place a vertical mark onto these pieces of stock 5-3/8" away from the center of the router bit, one before the bit and one after. These marks denote the starting and finishing point of your cuts. In other words, begin the cut with the end of the stile at the far mark and end the cut when the other end of the stile reaches the front mark.

Cut a cove on each side of the face of the two stiles, four cove cuts in all.
