Once the paint or stain/polyurethane finish has been applied to the assembly and the lid, we need to attach the lid to the top using a pair of 3/4" brass hinges.

Measure in 1-1/2" inches from each outside edge on the beveled side of the top piece and make a pencil mark. This will denote location for the outside edge of each of the brass hinges. Make the same marks on the 7-1/2-degree beveled edge of the lid.

Temporarily set the lid onto the opening in the top, aligning the two 7-1/2-degree beveled edges against one another. They should match cleanly, as each is one-half of the total 15-degree angle of the lid.

Once you're certain you have the lid aligned properly, remove the lid and attach the two screws to the lid using the brass screws that accompanied the hinges. The knuckle of each hinge should be flush with the top face of the lid. Pre-drill and insert the screws using a hand screwdriver rather than using your drill to avoid stripping the soft brass screws.

Once the hinges are attached to the lid, align the sides of the lid with the sides of the top piece, then flip the lid open and attach the hinges to the appropriate points on the top piece. Open and close the lid to make sure the lid closes properly and remains aligned (with the appropriate reveals).
