Once the ironing board assembly is completed and attached to the shelving unit, we'll attach the leg to the ironing board.

Begin by ripping a 4' long 2x4 to 2" in width and sand the edges and sides until smooth. Then, lower the ironing board until it is level, parallel to the floor, and measure down from the bottom of the board to the floor. Subtract 3/4" from this number and cut the 2x4 to that length.

Next, attach the 2x4 to the 3" x 3" square block you cut in an earlier step of these free woodworking plans using the 2" wide hinge. One side of the hinge should be screwed into the butt end of the leg, and the other side into the block.

Then, lift the ironing board up against the shelving unit and place the leg against the bottom of the ironing board, into the recess of the U-shaped pieces. Center the leg and lift it about a 1/4" up from the bottom of the recess. Glue and screw the 3" x 3" block into the bottom of the ironing board (near the rounded end of the board), so that when the board is lowered, the leg opens downward and rests against the floor. Check the ironing board for level once again, as it is likely that you'll need to remove the leg and trim the length slightly to accommodate the thickness of the hinge.
