With all of the shelving unit parts cut, we'll begin some assembly by attaching the shelf supports to the two tall standards. From the bottom of the left support, measure up 13" and make a pencil mark, followed by marks at 26-3/4", 40-1/2", 54-1/4", 68" and 81-3/4". Use your framing square to extend lines across the 24" width of the standard at each of these marks. Repeat on the other standard.
These lines will denote the top position of each of the 24" x 1-1/4" shelf supports you cut in step 2 of these free woodworking plans. To attach the supports to each standard, apply a thin, even layer of glue to the back side of one support and position on the bottom side of the first layout line. Hold the support in place with a few 4d finish nails. Repeat with the other eleven shelf supports.
TIP: The woodworking glue will be providing most of the strength to the connection between the standards and the shelf supports. For a bit more strength, use 1-1/4" wood screws (through counterbored holes) in the shelf supports to connect them to the standards.
Once all shelf supports are attached to the standards, attach one or both standards (depending on your installation) to the wall studs. As mentioned in a previous step, if you cannot tie at least one standard into the adjoining wall studs, use 1/4" or 1/2" plywood as a backer after the entire unit has been assembled and checked for square.
