Once all of the slats have been cut, you can assemble the base of the tray. Position the two struts (with the twelve notches) parallel to one another about 14 inches apart. Place a drop of woodworking glue in the first notch of each strut, and then place the notch in the first slat into the notch of each strut. Proceed slat by slat until all twelve are glued and firmly pressed into the notches in the struts. Use a rubber mallet or hammer with a block of wood to firmly seat all slats into the struts. Wipe off any excess glue from the joints with a wet rag as soon as possible.

Set the assembly to the side to allow the glue to dry.
