The Bottom Line

I've never been shy in my dislike for sanding sponges. They tend to wear our quickly and seldom seem to sand as well as plain old sandpaper.

However, the Gator Zip Sand-Block Sanding Sponges may be changing my mind. These dual-sided sanding sponges come in nine different grits, and seem to be as durable as they are convenient. The sandpaper applied to each side of the sponge held up well to some tough sanding tasks, and the grit didn't wear off nearly as quickly as I expected.

While I only tested the 120-grit sponge, I'll be eager to try some other grits on some upcoming projects.

Pros

  • Nine different grits, from 60-400 available
  • Sandpaper applied to both flat sides of sponge
  • Sandpaper held up quite well to tough sanding tasks
  • Two sponges per pack

Cons

  • Would like to see paper applied to one side of sponge, for edge and right-angle sanding

Description

  • Available in three stages: Stripping (60, 80, & 100 grit), Sanding (120, 150 & 180) and Finishing (220, 320 & 400).
  • Incorporates premium foam, grains and backing for a durable sponge that does a good job of sanding.
  • Would like to see grit applied to one edge of the sponge as well as the two large flat sides, for edge sanding.

Guide Review - Gator Zip Sand-Block Sanding Sponges

I've been a little hard on sanding sponges in the past, but this Gator Zip Sand-Block Sanding Sponge is a bit different. In testing, I used the sponge to clean up about two dozen small pieces that I cut on my band saw (small, being about six inches in diameter). I fully expected that I'd need to break out a power sander to clean up my band saw cuts, but I was pleasantly surprised when finding that one of the two Sand-Block sponges from the package was more than enough to handle the task. The finish came out nice and clean, and there was even still a good bit of grit left for another upcoming project.

This was quite a departure from previous experiences with similar products, as they either didn't sand well enough, or I probably would've needed three or four to finish a similar job. A very pleasant surprise, as well as a quality sanding job, all from a very convenient product.
