The Bottom Line
Bessey Tools has been a leading manufacturer of woodworking clamps since 1936, with a reputation for quality. I can truly say that every Bessey clamp I've ever owned has withstood more use (and probably abuse) than one could anticipate for the price.
The new Bessey U-style Light-Duty Bar Clamp appears to uphold the same high standards as it's predecessor. The steel rail is strong and durable, the jaw holds fast, and the ergonomic handle is smooth and easy to operate.
While not ideal for every clamping situation, the new U-style bar clamp would be a welcome addition to any wood shop.

Pros
- Easy to use, holds tight and is durable.
- U-shape allows for clamping in places where an F-style clamp would slip
- Serrated steel rail helps prevent jaw slippage
Cons
- U-style has a higher profile than traditional F-style clamps - too high for some situations
Description
- Serrated on two edges, the steel rail holds the jaw in place where an un-serrated rail might allow the jaw to slip.
- Strong cast jaw slides easily on the rail until angular pressure is applied, at which time the jaw locks in place.
- U-style makes for a higher profile, making it too tall for clamping a straight-edge for a circular saw.
Guide Review - Bessey U-Style Bar Clamp Review
The new Bessey U-Style Bar Clamps are a bit of a departure from the more common F-style clamps, and they have some advantages and disadvantages when compared to their more traditional brethren. While the U-shape allows for clamping in some locations where an F-style clamp might slip, the F-style's lower profile is better for clamping a straight-edge for cutting sheet goods with a circular saw. For that reason, I'll keep my F-style clamps around.
However, I do appreciate the U-style clamp when it comes to clamping trim and molding, as the U-shaped upper jaw allows for better clearance than other clamps. While I haven't tried to stress the clamp to a breaking point, I'm certain that the steel rail that forms the upper jaw will support a considerable amount of force.
