The Bottom Line
The 3M Fuel X2P Safety Glasses are an example of how safety can be stylish. The 3M Fuel X2P Safety Glasses are high-performance safety eyewear, but they don't forsake safety for style. In the version provided for this test (the model #90879), the glasses had an anti-scratch coating, adjustable nosepiece and polarized impact-resistant lenses that absorb up to 99.9% of UV rays. In testing, the glasses were comfortable and the nosepiece was easy to adjust, but the narrow shape of the lenses seemed to allow a gap beneath the lenses for debris to get behind the lenses. Slightly taller lenses would be welcome.
Pros
- Very comforable, with adjustable nosepiece and wide design that doesn't pinch the temples
- Polarized, anti-scratch coated impact-resistant lenses
- Two-tone frame
Cons
- Narrow lenses allowed more room for debris to get under the lenses than desirable
- Must wear very close to face to prevent gaps where debris could get to eyes
Description
- A variety of styles (with polarized or regular impact-resistant lenses) available
- Meets ANSI Z87.1-2003 safety standards
- Includes safety glasses, microfiber storage bag and lanyard
Guide Review - 3M Fuel X2P Safety Glasses Review
Nearly everyone would agree that wearing safety glasses is likely the primary safety rule to which every woodworker should adhere. It is in the preferred choice of safety glasses that opinions will vary. There are a variety of styles, shapes and sizes of safety glasses available for woodworking, and one person's favorite style certainly will differ from the next.
Keep that in mind when considering the 3M Fuel X2P Safety Glasses. These glasses certainly fill all of the requirements for quality glasses: impact resistant lenses and comfort, along with the added advantages of an adjustable nosepiece, anti-scratch coating and optional polarized lenses. The shape of one's face will certainly affect how well the lenses protect around the edges of the lens. In my case, this style of lens does not provide enough coverage for my taste, particularly on the underside, but that is likely a personal preference and indicative of the shape of my specific face.
In other words, just like regular eyeglasses or sunglasses, it's a good idea to try a variety of different styles, shapes and sizes of safety glasses to find a pair that fits your needs, and personal tastes best. When you find a pair that really feels good and provides the requisite comfort and protection, you'll be far more likely to wear them every time you do any woodworking task in the woodshop, which, once again, is the most important safety rule to which you can abide.
