The Bottom Line
Belt sanders really aren't a popular tool among woodworkers these days. They tend to be a little hard to handle, and even harder to control the depth of sanding without damaging the wood or leaving an uneven surface.
Perhaps the Bosch 1274DVS should change that perception. This extremely easy-to-use belt sander has some optional accessories (namely a locking sanding stand and fence, as well as a terrific sanding frame) that make a very well-built tool into a shop workhorse.
While I wouldn't reach for a belt sander for general sanding tasks, when a workhorse is needed, this would probably be my belt sander of choice.

Pros
- Smooth, variable speed from 550-1100 RPM with trigger lock
- Very easy to remove and install 3" x 21" belts
- Front handle detaches, allowing user to get front edge of sander close to edges
Cons
- Since exhaust port is on left side, right-handed users will definitely want to use the dust bag
- Does not include a carrying case
Description
- The left-side mounted dust bag does a surprisingly good job of picking up sawdust
- With the optional locking sanding stand, the belt sander can be turned over and used as a bench-top sander. Very handy.
- With the optional sanding frame, the depth of the sander is controlled, allowing one to sand mildly uneven surfaces flat.
Guide Review - Bosch 1274DVS Belt Sander
The Bosch 1274DVS is, in my opinion, about as good as a belt sander can get. It's variable speed is smooth, which helps prevent the "hold on for dear life" feeling that some belt sanders have. The variable speed trigger also has a lock mechanism, allowing the user to lock the switch at various speeds. The dust port on the "port" side (or left side) of the sander can be used with a dust collection system or with the right-angle dust bag (included).
I would strongly recommend each of the aforementioned accessories for this belt sander. First of all, the locking sander stand allows the user to turn the unit upside down (onto the flat top-side of the sander, a thoughtful feature in itself) and turn this variable speed belt sander into a bench top sanding station that can be used to sand small parts quickly and easily.
Perhaps even more impressive is the sanding frame, which attaches to the bottom of the sander and allows the user to control the depth of the sanding. This wide base has some small brushes on the bottom that allow the sander to basically glide around the surface, taking just a little bit off at a time. In such a fashion, one could presumably flatten out an uneven table top or spot in a wooden floor without fear of gouging or taking too big of a "bite," as one could easily do without use of the frame.
While the belt sander won't be anywhere close to the most often tool in your shop, you'll certainly be glad if you have this one when you need it.
