The Bottom Line
Fine Homebuilding magazine is a sister publication of one of our favorite woodworking periodicals, Fine Woodworking magazine, and while it is geared toward home building and remodeling, there are some excellent woodworking ideas and articles in each issue. Often, the line between woodworking and home improvement can be a bit blurry, but considering the quality writing in Taunton's magazines, we couldn't think of a reason not to highly recommend them both.
Pros
- Interesting woodworking ideas in every issue
- Master Carpenter section offers great instruction
- Tool Reviews are well-researched and informative
Cons
- Articles tend to be geared more toward contractors rather than beginners
Description
- Very well-written articles accompanied by descriptive pictures and drawings.
- Tool reviews are comprehensive and well-researched.
- Articles can be a bit advanced in nature, but every level of woodworker should get something from every article.
Guide Review - Fine Homebuilding Magazine
While Taunton's Fine Woodworking is probably more appropriate for woodworkers front-to-back, Fine Homebuilding is certainly worth a regular read. As in Fine Woodworking, you'll find a number of discussions of woodworking tools and techniques in Fine Homebuilding, particularly in their "Master Carpenter" section. I learn quite a few things from every issue, even though it is primarily geared toward remodeling and home building.
Taunton's Fine Homebuilding is published with eight issues per year. Price is $7.99 per issue on the newsstand, but subscriptions are substantially less expensive. Visit the website for subscription information.
