Definition: A countersink is a specialty drill bit which is used for creating space for the head of a wood screw. After drilling a pilot hole in the hardwood, drilling the surface of the hole in the hardwood with a tapered countersink will allow the head of the screw to safely sink below the surface of the wood without splitting the wood.
Alternate Spellings: counter-sink
