When building a project using screws, there are a number of sizes and styles available. In some cases, there are specific screws that should only be used (such as specially-treated deck screws in pressure treated lumber), but in other cases, there are a variety of options from which to choose.
Some things to consider when choosing a wood screw for a particular application are not only the length, diameter and number of threads per inch, but also consider the grain of the two adjoining boards, and how they align.
For some guidelines that will help answer these questions, read How to Choose the Proper Screw Size.
