Rabbets can be cut a variety of ways. Old-school woodworkers used chisels and rabbeting planes, whereas modern woodworkers prefer stacked dado blades or routers with a rabbeting bit equipped with a guide bearing.
When you need to cut a rabbet in an assembly (depending on the assembly), none of these options may be a suitable option.
