Set of Bosch Daredevil Paddle BitsDrilling larger-diameter holes in wood (from 3/8-inch up to about 1-1/2 inches in diameter) can be accomplished a number of ways, but each seems to have their own advantages and drawbacks. For instance, twist drill bits for woodworking are typically limited to about 1/2-inch in diameter maximum. Auger bits are often way too aggressive for fine woodworking, and hole saws take forever, seem to burn their way through the wood more than cut through, and can be difficult to remove the plug after completing the hole.

One common type of bit used for larger-diameter holes is the spade drill bit, commonly referred to as the paddle bit. In this article, learn how to drill large holes in wood with ease using Spade Drill Bits, as well as some tips for making more difficult cuts (such as angled holes) or preventing blow-outs on the back side of the holes.
