Do You Need to Have a Corded Power Drill?

Thursday November 20, 2008
Cordless drills provide convenient, portable drilling power and are very easy to use. The batteries on new cordless drills lasting longer than older models, plus many include two batteries, so you can charge one battery while the other is in use.

Though I may rarely need one, I still find it quite useful to keep a quality corded power drill readily available. There are a number of tasks where a cordless power drill simply doesn't have enough power for the task at hand.

So, if you need a corded power drill, what features should you look for? Find the answer to that question and more in Do You Need to Have a Corded Power Drill?

The need for a corded drill is ever more important to me in the shop. While the cordless do have their advantages. Corded Drills are very vital. I have had drilling jobs where the cordless didn’t last as long. When using wire wheels or sanding discs the consistent power supply can’t be beat. Drilling through thick materials is another draw back for the cordless. Since this subject is on corded drills these are the things I look for in a corded drill. Number 1 thing is variable speed. Then I want a keyed chuck as my hands are unable to tighten the keyless chucks. A 1/2″ dual duty drill as a Hammer drill is also a plus. I have three types of drills in my shop not including the drill press. The Corded, The Cordless and the Air drill. While I use all three types in my shop, I find the corded drill my drill of choice for multiple drilling operations.
