A Simple Alternative to Dovetails

Thursday August 7, 2008
Properly cut dovetail joints are amazingly simple, beautiful to look at and amazingly strong. However, dovetail joints can be difficult to cut if you choose to cut them by hand. A more common, modern choice is to use a dovetail jig and a router.

What do you do if you don't have a router and/or a dovetail jig?

In these instances, a simpler option is the box joint. There are a number of ways to cut a box joint, and they can actually be a lot of fun to make. Learn the advantages of the box joint and a the best ways to cut them in Box Joints - A Dovetail Alternative. We even include the instructions for building a neat little jig to cut perfect box joints every time with your table saw.

The simplest, and a very
effective alternative to dovetailing is the near forgotten dowel pin.

With the new compressed
dowel pins, they are almost as effective as biscuit
joining. They expand upon contact with glue.

And you can buy
a doweling jig for very little, or make one from
hardwood, aluminum or steel.
